A quirky alien, a legal thriller and Portland hit big screen"Paul," a celebration of sci-fi flicks, fanboys and good old-fashioned bromance, is a thoroughly enjoyable road trip.British pals Graeme (Simon Pegg) and Clive (Nick Frost) are visiting the United States to attend San Diego's Comic-Con. They plan to top off their holiday with an RV trip, hitting such UFO-friendly sites as Nevada's Area 51 and Roswell, N.M. During their travels, the guys encounter the title character, Paul, an alien who looks like something out of a Spielberg movie grammar school golf . Voiced by Seth Rogen in his typical, vaguely stoned mode, Paul chain-smokes, has a thing for toilet humor and enjoys dancing to Marvin Gaye. The government wants to kill Paul to study his brain, so he's searching for a way home."Paul" is genial and often hilarious, but there are stretches that feel undercooked and strangely aimless. But in its best moments, "Paul" pays loving tribute to a film genre while standing on its own as entertainment.Pegg and Frost are also so endearing that it's hard to hold too much against "Paul."Rated R for language and drug use. Regal Lancaster Mall Stadium 11, Cinebarre Salem 7 and Independence Cinema 8."Lawyer" is the screen adaptation of Michael Connelly's clever and suspenseful legal thriller.Operating out of the back seat of his chauffeured but shabby Lincoln Town Car, attorney Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is not exactly an ambulance chaser, but he is in the general neighborhood Good Morning America Interview of Tiger Woods. His conscience comes into play when he takes the case of petulant Beverly Hills playboy Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), who is charged with the brutal beating of a woman he met in a bar. Louis maintains his innocence, claiming she was a prostitute out to fleece him. At first, the case looks straightforward enough, but it grows more intricate and far more dangerous.Rated R for some violence, sexual content and language. Regal Santiam 11, Cinebarre Salem 7 and Independence Cinema 8.
